Amsterdam isn’t just another great football city—it’s a place where the game is woven into everyday life. From the street courts where future stars hone their skills to the iconic pubs filled with Ajax memorabilia, you can feel the passion for football in every corner. Whether you’re here for a weekend getaway or a full-on football pilgrimage, there are certain things you simply can’t miss. We’ve put together this essential Amsterdam football bucket list to make sure you experience the best of both Dutch football culture and the city itself.
1. Witness Ajax at the Johan Cruijff ArenA
There’s no better way to experience Amsterdam’s football culture than by watching Ajax play live. We still remember the goosebumps when we first saw the team walk onto the pitch during a European night, the stands filled with thousands of waving red and white flags. The energy inside the Johan Cruijff ArenA is unreal, but nothing beats halftime, when the entire stadium sings “Three Little Birds” in unison—one of the best football traditions anywhere. If you can, try to grab a seat in the F-Side or just soak in the passion from anywhere in the stadium. Watching Ajax live isn’t just about football; it’s about being part of something bigger.
2. Walk in the Footsteps of Johan Cruijff
Amsterdam breathes football history, and no name is bigger than Johan Cruijff. He grew up in Betondorp, just across from Watergraafsmeer, where Ajax’s old stadium De Meer once stood. Walking through these neighborhoods, it’s easy to imagine how a young Cruijff first fell in love with the game. We always recommend visiting Olympiaplein, where he played as a kid, and then heading to De Pijp, a neighborhood filled with murals of Ajax legends. If you want to keep the football vibes going, grab a drink at Cafe Johan, a small but legendary bar where fans gather to talk about Ajax, past and present.
3. Experience the True Amsterdam Along the Canals
Football aside, Amsterdam is just an incredible city to explore. Every time we visit, we make sure to take a canal cruise, especially at sunset when the lights reflect off the water. The historic UNESCO-listed canal belt ¹ is over 400 years old, and even if you’ve seen pictures, nothing compares to floating through it in real life. If you prefer to stay on foot, we highly recommend walking through the Jordaan, a historic district full of narrow streets, hidden courtyards, and local cafés.
4. Watch a Game in an Amsterdam Sports Bar
Not every trip lines up with an Ajax home match, but luckily, Amsterdam has some of the best sports bars in Europe. We’ve spent some evenings in bars packed with locals and fellow travelers, all cheering on their teams with a cold Heineken in hand. Whether you’re watching Ajax, a Premier League match, or a Champions League showdown, the atmosphere in bars like Satellite Sports Café or Belushi’s is unmatched.
5. Eat Like a Local: Dutch Football Snacks & Late-Night Bites
One of our favorite things about Amsterdam? The snacks. If you’re here for football, you need to eat like a local. Grab a portion of Bitterballen (deep-fried meat croquettes) at a brown café, order Patat met mayo (Dutch fries drowned in mayo) from a street vendor, or—if you’re feeling adventurous—try a Broodje Haring (raw herring sandwich). And of course, there’s FEBO, a fast-food spot where you literally pick your snacks from a vending wall. After a few beers in a sports bar, it’s a perfect late-night bite.
