A modern, lively, mid-sized day out near Milan. At around 17,000 the U-Power Stadium is compact and comfortable, extensively upgraded during the Berlusconi years, and the Curva Davide Pieri behind one goal — named after a supporter lost in 1998 — provides the passionate, noisy heart of the home support. One quirk to note: the ground was originally planned with an athletics track, so the stands sit a little further from the pitch than at a purpose-built football ground. The fans are known as enthusiastic and welcoming, and the novelty of Serie A remains fresh here. Expect a friendly, red-and-white matchday within easy reach of Milan.

The ground sits on the north-eastern outskirts of Monza, around 15–20km north of Milan. Public transport is run by ATM — the same operator as Milan — so you can simply tap your card. Buses Z206 and Z304 run from central Monza (Porta Castello, Piazza Carducci) to the Viale Sicilia stop, a five-minute walk from the ground. From Monza’s main train station it’s about a five-minute taxi, and it’s roughly a 30-minute drive from Milano Centrale. Right by the ground there’s a small shop selling sandwiches and drinks, and the stadium itself has good food and drink options, but for a proper build-up head into Monza’s pleasant centre beforehand. This is prosperous Brianza, with plenty of bars, cafés and restaurants around the town, and a Lombard aperitivo is the ideal warm-up. Payment is card-friendly, and kiosks and the food stands serve a good range. The U-Power Stadium is a tidy, modernised ground, its main stand — named after supporter Angelo Scotti — flanked by two characteristic pylons, though some ends and the upper areas are uncovered, so dress for the weather. The Curva Davide Pieri is the home ultras’ end and the loudest; away fans go in the Curva Nord. The slight distance from the pitch, a legacy of the original track design, is the one drawback, but the atmosphere is good and the facilities modern. Tickets are sold through Vivaticket and authorised outlets, as well as at the Brianteo on matchdays. The modest capacity means the bigger games can sell out, so book ahead, though many fixtures are readily available. As across Italy, tickets are nominative and photo ID matching the name is checked at the gate, so use official channels and bring matching identification. Prices are reasonable. The buses and trains run back into Monza and on to Milan, making the getaway straightforward. Monza rewards a look beyond the football: the city is famous above all for the Autodromo Nazionale, the historic Formula 1 circuit set in one of Europe’s largest walled parks, and it’s also home to the grand neoclassical Villa Reale and the Duomo, which houses the ancient Iron Crown of Lombardy.
