Why Athletic Club is different
Athletic Club's first team is built around players formed in the Basque football system. That policy makes a match at San Mamés feel like a celebration of regional identity as much as a league fixture. The current stadium opened in 2013, but kept the old ground's nickname: La Catedral.
Getting to San Mamés
The ground sits by the river and is unusually central for a modern stadium. Metro services stop at San Mamés, only a few minutes from the entrances; tram and bus routes serve the same area. Walking from central Bilbao is also a realistic option, so there is little reason to drive on matchday.
Build the day around Bilbao
Start in the Casco Viejo and follow the local txikiteo ritual: move between pintxos bars for a small plate and drink at each stop. Allow enough time to be inside before the teams emerge; the steep ends and lower tiers carry the most noise. General-sale tickets can be scarce because of the large season-ticket base, especially for the Basque derby and visits from Spain's biggest clubs.
If there is no match
The stadium tour and Athletic Club museum make San Mamés a worthwhile visit on non-matchdays too. Confirm the latest opening hours and ticket arrangements with the club before travelling.
