Jol joined Ajax ahead of the 2009–10 season, taking over from Marco van Basten. The club was hungry for success but scarred by inconsistency. Expectations were sky-high.
He inherited a talented squad that needed guidance—players like Luis Suárez, Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, and Gregory van der Wiel were bursting with potential. Jol’s mission was to mold them into a title-challenging team.

Jol began the 2010–11 season with optimism, but cracks soon appeared. Transfers didn’t go as planned. The club’s finances limited spending, and key players were unsettled—Suárez, in particular, was attracting interest from abroad.
The team struggled for consistency. European results were disappointing. Behind the scenes, tensions with the Ajax board—particularly over recruitment and squad depth—grew.
By December 2010, Jol resigned. Frank de Boer replaced him almost immediately.
Jol moved on to manage Fulham in the Premier League and later coached in Egypt with Al Ahly. Though he never quite returned to the spotlight he enjoyed at Ajax and Tottenham, his football philosophy continued to influence players and clubs across different continents.
