John Houlding was deeply involved in local politics, in addition to his business activities. He was elected to the Liverpool City Council as a Conservative. There he presents the Everton ward. His dedication to public service culminated in his appointment as Lord Mayor of Liverpool in 1897. Houlding was also a member of the Orange Order, a Protestant fraternal organization with a significant presence in Liverpool during that era.
Houlding’s association with football began when he became the president of Everton Football Club. Recognizing the need for a suitable playing ground, he facilitated Everton’s move to a field on Anfield Road, owned by his fellow brewer, John Orrell. This move was instrumental in Everton’s early development, providing them with a dedicated venue to host matches.
As Everton’s popularity grew, so did the value of Anfield. Houlding, as the landlord, increased the rent from £100 to £250, a decision that led to tensions with the Everton committee. The disagreement wasn’t solely about rent; it encompassed broader issues related to the club’s management and the sale of alcohol at matches, given Houlding’s interests in brewing. These disputes ultimately resulted in Everton relocating to Goodison Park in 1892.
Left with an empty stadium after Everton’s departure, Houlding took a bold step by founding a new football club to occupy Anfield. Initially, he attempted to retain the name “Everton” by registering “Everton Football Club and Athletic Grounds Company, Limited.” However, the Football League ruled that the name belonged to the original Everton club. Consequently, Houlding adopted the name “Liverpool Football Club” for his new venture.
Liverpool F.C. played its inaugural match on September 1, 1892, securing a 7–1 victory against Rotherham Town. The team, composed entirely of Scottish players recruited by manager John McKenna, quickly made a mark by winning the Lancashire League in their debut season. Following this success, Liverpool was admitted into the Football League Second Division for the 1893–94 season. Under Houlding’s leadership, the club continued to grow, achieving promotion to the First Division in 1896 and clinching their first league title in 1901.
